Tensions have begun to rise in Kwaggafontein after tyres were set alight at the Kwaggafontein Mall Fourway intersection as demonstrators gathered for the planned 30 June anti-illegal immigration march.
The burning tyres have disrupted traffic and created safety concerns for motorists and nearby businesses, with smoke billowing over one of the area’s busiest intersections.
While organisers had earlier called for a peaceful demonstration, the incident has heightened concerns about the possibility of unrest as protests continue across parts of the country.
Law enforcement officers are expected to closely monitor the situation and intervene where necessary to maintain public order and ensure the safety of residents and commuters.
At this stage, there have been no confirmed reports of injuries or arrests linked to the incident.
Authorities have urged demonstrators to exercise their constitutional right to protest peacefully and warned that acts of violence, intimidation, arson or damage to property will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
