In a show of unity and solidarity, former President Jacob Zuma led a delegation from the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party to pay respects to the family of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema on Friday. The visit to the Malema family home in Polokwane was a gesture of support following the passing of Malema’s maternal aunt, Mme Martha Motlanalo Malema, who died at the age of 54.
Mme Malema was a dedicated community member and long-time EFF supporter in Seshego’s Ward 13, remembered for her love for her family and active role in local politics. The MK Party delegation, including senior figures and MPs, was described as “a powerful display of unity among progressive forces”.
This gesture is notable given the historical rivalry between the MK Party and the EFF, both positioning themselves as champions of the poor and working class. The visit has been welcomed by political observers as a rare moment of humanity transcending party lines in South Africa’s opposition landscape.
EFF officials had earlier visited the home to offer condolences, and Mme Malema’s funeral is scheduled for Sunday, 22 March 2026. The occasion highlights how personal loss can momentarily bridge ideological divides.
