Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s contract as KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner of the South African State Police Service (SAPS) has been renewed for another five-year term, with Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli expressing confidence in Mkhwanazi’s leadership and professionalism. Mkhwanazi’s contract, which was set to expire on March 30, 2026, has been extended following a meeting between Ntuli and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola.
Mkhwanazi has been credited with implementing targeted and intelligence-driven interventions to combat serious and violent crime, including political killings, organised crime, and extortion in KwaZulu-Natal. His leadership has contributed significantly to restoring public confidence in law enforcement and reinforcing the rule of law, particularly in communities most affected by crime.
The renewal comes amid heightened expectations for accountability and reform, with Mkhwanazi having previously made allegations about criminal infiltration within police structures and possible links between criminal syndicates, politicians, and senior officers.
