A political firestorm has erupted in the Madibeng Local Municipality following the emergence of a 30-minute audio recording allegedly capturing Mayor Douglas Maimane orchestrating a paid campaign to undermine his own party, the African National Congress (ANC).
The recording, which has sent shockwaves through the North West political landscape, purportedly features Maimane offering R200,000 to two opposition councillors to mobilize against ANC interests. The Mayor is heard negotiating with Peter Tsheola (AIC Councillor) and Sechat Sekgotho (Forum for Service Delivery Councillor).
The funds were allegedly promised in exchange for a grassroots campaign to destabilize the ANC’s influence in the region, suggesting a deep-seated fracture within the local council. “If these allegations are proven true, this isn’t just political maneuvering – it’s a direct betrayal of the mandate given by the voters and the party,” said a local political analyst.
The ANC provincial leadership has yet to comment on disciplinary action, but pressure is mounting on Maimane to step down pending an investigation. The Mayor’s office has not issued a formal rebuttal, and the recording continues to circulate on social media, threatening the Madibeng council’s legitimacy and service delivery stability.
