The Afrika Mayibuye Movement, led by Floyd Shivambu, and the March and March movement, headed by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, have agreed to jointly campaign against undocumented immigration. The two groups announced the partnership following bilateral talks held today, 15 June.
In a joint statement, the organisations said illegal immigration poses security risks and disrupts government resource planning. They also accused the private sector of exploiting the situation by employing undocumented foreign nationals.
According to the statement, the groups agreed to several joint actions. These include holding public seminars, reviewing immigration laws at all levels of government, engaging stakeholders, running public awareness campaigns, and supporting peaceful actions against illegal immigration.
The movements called on all sectors of society to unite behind solutions to the issue and urged against delegitimising those involved in the campaign. They said coordinated action was needed to address what they described as a national crisis.
Both Afrika Mayibuye and March and March have previously held separate events and statements on immigration. Today’s agreement marks their first formal joint campaign.
