MAJAKANENG — The family of Sonwabile Hendrick Mqaba is calling for an investigation into his death following an alleged assault at his home in Majakaneng on Sunday, 20 September.
In a statement, the family said five people entered their home shortly after 01h00, assaulted Mqaba and drove away with him. The family said he died at Brits Hospital a few hours later.
The family named ANC Councillor Levy Ramatlhape, ANC councillor candidate Lawrence Ramatlhape, Vusi, Mpho, whom it identified as the driver, and an unidentified man as allegedly involved. Their alleged involvement has not been established by a court.
According to the family, Mqaba was accused of rape during the incident. The family said it did not know what had happened between Mqaba and the complainant and could not comment on that allegation.
The family said police at Mooinooi Police Station told them the matter had been registered as an inquest under case number 250/09/2026. It has called for a thorough investigation, witness protection and freedom from intimidation as it mourns.
In a separate statement, EFF Madibeng called for a swift and impartial investigation. It said those implicated should be brought before a court where lawful grounds for arrest exist, regardless of political position. The organisation also urged anyone with information to cooperate with the authorities.
