Traditional healer and entertainer Master Kortes, who calls himself the “King of Limpopo”, has announced the opening of his initiation school, known as Koma in Sepedi.
In a public announcement, Master Kortes invited families across Limpopo to enroll their sons for initiation. For generations, initiation schools have played a key role in many South African communities, teaching boys discipline, courage, responsibility, respect and the values expected of men before starting their own families.
Supporters of the initiative point to Master Kortes’ community profile. They cite his work as a traditional healer, musician, dancer and operator of a rehabilitation centre in his area as reasons for their confidence in the school.
The announcement has also sparked mixed reactions online. While some community members welcomed the move, others raised questions about trust and accountability. Commenters emphasized that the safety and well-being of initiates must remain the top priority, and that parents need assurance their children will return home safely with valuable life lessons.
Initiation schools carry significant responsibility. Parents place their trust in school leaders to protect initiates and uphold cultural practices in line with the law and health regulations. The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities, along with provincial health and traditional affairs departments, monitor initiation schools to ensure compliance with safety standards.
Master Kortes has not released further details on the location, dates, or oversight measures for the school. No official response has been issued yet by the Limpopo Department of Traditional Affairs.
